Periodontics in Bedford
Gum disease can cause tooth loss and can even impact your overall health – conditions such as heart disease have been linked to gum disease. It’s important to keep your gums healthy to prevent infections that can lead to gum disease. We provide periodontal treatments to prevent gum infections and gum disease and treat other conditions that affect the health of your gums.
Flap Procedures
Flap procedures are treatments that require access to the roots of your teeth, such as removing tartar or treating infected tissue. To access the roots, we make an incision to open a small “flap” of gum tissue. After treatment, we re-attach the gum tissue with sutures.
Scaling and Root Planing
Scaling and root planing are hygiene procedures to remove irritants such as plaque, tartar, and rough patches from the roots of your teeth. If your gums become irritated, they can become vulnerable to bacterial infection. By removing the irritants with special tools we ensure that your gums remain healthy.
Extractions
Teeth that can’t be restored will need to be extracted to prevent them from putting your gums or other teeth at risk of damage. Extractions are performed under local anesthetic and we can offer sedation for anxious patients. Once the tooth has been extracted it can be replaced with restorations such as a bridge or dental implant.
Crown Lengthening
Crown lengthening is a treatment where gum tissue is removed from around the base of a tooth to expose more of the enamel. It can be used for cosmetic reasons, to change the appearance of the tooth, or to prepare a tooth for a dental crown.
